The Zune Music Video software is free and is necessary to sync content from a computer to a Zune player or Windows Phone.

Note A software disc is no longer included with the newer Zune players.

The Zune player software is also free and should be updated from time to time to get the latest improvements for your Windows Phone 7.

Download and save the most recent version of the Zune software package. To do this, click here.

If the computer doesn t have Internet access

If you want to install the software onto a computer that doesn t have Internet access, follow these steps:

On a computer that does have Internet access, download and save the most recent version of the Zune software package. To do this, click here.

Copy the files onto a removable storage device hard drive, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, and copy the files onto the computer that doesn t have Internet access. Then, install the software.

There are two ways to uninstall and reinstall the Zune software: automatically and manually.

Automatic method

For all versions of Windows 8

To remove and reinstall the Zune software automatically, click the Diagnose and fix this problem link, below. Then, click Run in the File Download dialog box and follow the steps in the wizard.

Manual method

To perform a clean installation of the Zune software, follow these steps:

Step 1: Uninstall the Zune software

Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista

Make sure that the Zune player or phone is not connected to your computer.

Open Programs and Features:

For Windows 7 or Windows Vista: Click Start, type appwiz.cpl in the Start Search box, and then press Enter.

For Windows 8: Type uninstall at the Start screen, click or tap Settings in the right panel, and then click or tap Uninstall a program.

In the Uninstall or change a program box, click Zune, and then click Uninstall.

Click Yes to remove the Zune software.

If any of the following software is listed in the Uninstall or change a program window, remove that software from the computer:

Microsoft User-Mode Driver Framework Feature Pack 1.0

Windows Driver Package – Microsoft WPD

Windows Media Format 11 SDK

Windows Portable Devices

Note If you receive an error message that states that there are program dependencies blocking the removal of the software, do not remove that software. Microsoft User-Mode Driver Framework Feature Pack 1.0 and Windows Driver Package – Microsoft WPD are automatically installed when you run Zune setup. If you must have the Windows Media Format 11 SDK installed, you can reinstall the software from the MSDN Windows Media Developer Center website after you install the Zune software.

Open the C: Program files folder.

Locate and right-click the Zune folder, and then click Delete.

Windows XP

Make sure that the Zune player or phone is not connected to the computer.

Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl, and then click OK.

In the Add or Remove Programs window, click Zune, and then click Remove.

If any of the following software appears in the Add or Remove Programs window, remove that software from the computer:

Microsoft User-Mode Driver Framework Feature Pack 1.0

Windows Driver Package – Microsoft WPD

Windows Media Format 11 SDK

Windows Portable Devices

Note If you receive an error message that states that there are program dependencies that are blocking the removal of the software, do not remove that software. Microsoft User-Mode Driver Framework Feature Pack 1.0 and Windows Driver Package – Microsoft WPD are automatically installed when you run Zune Setup. If you must have the Windows Media Format 11 SDK installed, you can reinstall the software from the MSDN Windows Media Developer Center website after you install the Zune software.

Open the C: Program files folder.

Note If the programs list doesn t appear, click Show the contents of this folder.

Locate and right-click the Zune folder, and then click Delete.

Step 2: Empty the Windows temporary folder

To empty the Windows temporary folder, follow these steps:

Click Start, click Run, type temp, and then click OK.

Click Edit.

Click Select All.

Click File, and then click Delete. You receive the following message:

Are you sure you want to send these items to the Recycle Bin.

Step 3: Reinstall the Zune software

To reinstall the Zune software, click here.

Note You must be logged on to your computer by using an account that has Administrator rights.

During the installation, the software prompts you to reconnect your Zune player or phone. When the software is finished installing, you may have to re-enter your Microsoft account credentials.

From time to time, you will be prompted to update your Zune player s software. If you find you have a problem with your player, restoring or reformatting its software to its original factory settings is a last resort before you send it to Microsoft for service.

Important When you remove and reinstall the Zune player software, you ll also erase all content that s stored on your player, including music, videos, pictures, podcasts, friends, games, and audiobooks. It s a good idea to sync your player with the Zune Music   Video software on your computer to back up any Zune Marketplace content before you start. You may then want to burn your collection to a disc. Here are two links to help you prepare your player:

If you have a Zune HD

Start by trying to reinstall the Zune player software without erasing it.

Immediately press and hold the Media button until CONNECT ZUNE TO YOUR PC appears on the screen.

Connect your Zune HD to the computer that has the current version of the Zune Music Video software. Then, update your player.

You should now be able to use your player again.

If your Zune HD still doesn t work correctly after you follow these steps, try erasing your player software and then reinstalling it. Remember, this will erase all your data, so be sure to back up your content if possible by syncing your Zune player to your collection in the Zune Music Video software.

Press and hold the On/Off button for about 10 seconds until the player restarts.

Immediately press and hold both the Media button and the Home button until CONNECT ZUNE TO YOUR PC is displayed on the screen.

When you see the message CONNECT ZUNE TO YOUR PC, connect your player to the computer that has the Zune Music Video software installed, and update your player s device software. It should take about 30 minutes to update the player software. After you give your Zune HD a name, and configure some other settings, and then you re ready to use your player again.

Resync your content to your player.

If you have a player other than a Zune HD

Set the Hold switch to the unlocked position.

Press and hold the top of the Zune Pad and the Back button at the same time, and keep them down until the Zune player restarts.

What if my player doesn t respond.

After you release the buttons, press and hold the following combination of buttons, depending on your player model.

If you have the 30GB Zune: Press and hold the Back button while you press both the left side of the Zune Pad and the center of the Zune Pad.

If your player still doesn t work after you reinstall the player software, you ll need to send it in for service. Please go to the Zune Online Service Center page for help.
